Based on the recent reports of the death of the Americans near Juarez in the media, a lot of fear has been generated about the safety of Americans in Mexico. From what I've read online it seems as if Oaxaca is fairly safe, but are there now undercurrents of danger with the increasing friction between gangs and the whole narcotics issue?
I also read about a massacre of about 13 people in a village in Oaxaca state in February. Any comments by those of you who have been there recently or are there are most welcome. My family is pressuring me to cancel my trip and I want to be well-informed. Oaxaca is a safe place to visit. We just returned from spending about two weeks in Oaxaca City and St. Agustinillo and had a magical and wonderful time.
Oaxaca City is charming with fabulous food and many wonderful artisans who create beautiful weaving, wood carved animals and pottery. The forum people are right about how safe it is in Oaxaca.
