Wide shot of comfort women press conference Breakaway members said Lila Pilipina, a support group for former comfort women, was not pushing hard enough for official compensation directly from the Japanese government.
The breakaway group call themselves Malaya Lolas. At a recent press conference in Manila they said the private fund is an attempt by Japan's government to evade its war responsibility. The new group, which claims 11 former sex slaves as members, says Japan should recognise that sexual slavery was a war crime and should "rectify the past" through direct compensation to the victims. She is now the General Secretary of the Malaya Lolas.

With this objective we vow to reject and oppose the Asian Women's Fund. Japan's government denied any involvement with the wartime brothels until several years ago. The government has refused to pay any compensation, saying that all war-related claims were settled by postwar treaties. Instead, it formed the Asian Women's Fund, a private fund financed by individual and corporate donations to make payments to the women. Lila Pilipina coordinator Nelia Sancho says the group, which had 82 members before the defections, continues to officially reject the Asian Women's Fund as a "final solution".
